Kyokushin karate practitioners lined up in rows preparing to train during the Knockdown Fighting Seminar at Kaizen Kan Dojo in Tucson, Arizona.

Kyokushin Knockdown Fighting Seminar Held in Tucson

Approximately 30 Kyokushin practitioners came together at Kaizen Kan Dojo in Tucson, Arizona, September 18–19 for two days of training focused on movement, positioning and strategy for knockdown fighting. The seminar was led by Shihan Bill Schrader, 6th Dan, and Sensei Omar Covarrubias, 3rd Dan. Training emphasized tai sabaki, angles and circular movement, with particular attention given to developing effective positioning and movement for Kyokushin knockdown fighting.

The weekend brought together karateka from several Kyokushin dojos and groups, with a strong representation of experienced black belts. Participants included members of Shihan Mercado’s group in Phoenix, Hioki Dojo in Phoenix, practitioners from Dennis Lane’s dojo in North Carolina, members training with Shihan Schrader, and local independent Kyokushin practitioners. Bringing together karateka from different dojos, organizations and backgrounds provided an opportunity to share training and experience while exploring the importance of positioning, movement and angles in kumite.

The seminar also reflected one of the strengths of the broader Kyokushin community: practitioners with different organizational affiliations can come together on the dojo floor, train hard, exchange ideas and share in the common traditions of Kyokushin Karate.

USA-IFK thanks Shihan Schrader, Sensei Covarrubias, Kaizen Kan Dojo and everyone who participated in the weekend of training.
